IMG_0751What is SEX EDUCATION?

Sex education is not limited to what you learned in school during your adolescent years.  It goes beyond the birds & the bees, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and basic anatomy.  Sex education should be taught throughout one’s life to address developmental changes and life needs.  Information pertaining to topics such as reproduction, biological sex, gender, sexual erotic minority people, sexual rights and responsibilities, sexual norms, and pleasure are just a few of the areas that can be addressed.  The wonderful thing about sex is there is always something to learn.

Who should receive SEX EDUCATION?

Everyone should learn about sex & sexuality.  Humans are sexual beings by nature.

When should someone receive SEX EDUCATION?

Sex education should be taught early in age appropriate ways.  Sex educators should also take any developmental challenges into consideration.  Did you know that a great way to protect children against sexual assault is by teaching them the names of their body parts so they can develop a vocabulary, awareness, and a sense of ownership?  Sex education should expand as an individual ages, reaches developmental milestones (i.e. puberty, menopause, etc.), and develops needs.

Where can someone go to receive SEX EDUCATION?

Because the sex education delivered in schools is usually very limited, it is important that IMG_0065schools aren’t held responsible for being the sole source of sex education.  If you are a parent, be comfortable talking about sex so that your children feel safe to go home and ask questions.  If you are a college student, take a human sexuality class.  If you are a reader, hit a bookstore.  If you are visual person, look into classes that might be available in your community.  There are all sorts of resources.  When seeking professional help, make sure the individual you are working with is qualified, nonjudgmental, and elicits open and honest responses from you.  Directories offered by the American Association for Sexuality, Educators, Counselors, and Therapists (AASECT) and Kink Aware Professionals (KAP) can be a great resources when looking for assistance.

Why is SEX EDUCATION important?

Even if you’re abstinent and/or asexual, there is something to learn about sex and how the body functions for reproduction purposes.  Learning about sex and sexuality can help you increase your self-awareness, promote self-esteem, and encourage positive self-discovery.

How can I learn more?

A great way to learn more is by taking a minute to figure out what questions you have.  Then make yourself open to learn and find a knowledgeable source of information.  If you would like to request sex education, please contact ninaruedas@gmail.com.
